What is Find Memphis

A lot of people have asked us over the past month what Find Memphis is, what we are doing, what we aim to be, and how we came to be.  Especially those who have known us for numerous years as people strongly affiliated with performing on and around the stage.  It makes sense to ask – people’s hobbies and interests don’t just turn around out of nowhere.  You don’t just “make a website” when you have never expressed interest or had experience of any kind in website making, or even how to properly work a computer.  I believe we’ve been known to have perfectly operator-friendly machines such as printers in our possession over the years that simply sat unattended because the whole plugging-it-in thing that makes it go seemed too daunting to undertake.  Fortunately I can operate a corkscrew and Carla can type in “James Brown” on YouTube, so don’t worry friends – we can still pass the time.

But a website?? It seems unlikely.  Even to us.  So here it goes.

Find Memphis exists now because Carla started taking captivating photos on a daily basis that turned many a head and I was lucky enough to be there on most of those occasions – therefore, of course, I became affiliated by the great art of social media photo tagging.  Our friend Rory Dale decided one day that he was tired of squinting at her photos on Instagram and wanted a better look at them in a high-quality format.  So he called me and together we created findmemphis.com.

Find Memphis is – for the time being – a cheerleader of all things Memphis.  It is a photography-based website interested in promoting the city through the visual art of photography.   We are not keeping our finds to ourselves, nor are we trying to DO something grand.  But we promote and celebrate all things old and new and our only hope is to instill the kind of excitement that we feel privileged enough to have, in others upon their viewings of our photographs.

Be not mistaken, however.  Find Memphis is also for hire.  From salons to corporations to album covers to book jackets to personal portraits to commissioned works, our photography has been requested by many and we are all too happy to comply!  Sales from our works will go directly into continuing to “find” Memphis.  It will allow us to photograph the city and interview the humans in it to share as many stories as we can.  Because stories are life.  To be heard and to hear each other, to reach out and connect, to see the beauty in unlikely places, to celebrate the beauty in obvious places, to confront the painful or decayed, to share the story….. that is all we are trying to do.

We were recently on WKNO FM 91.1. Listen to us talk about this journey!

We welcome all thoughts and suggestions any time.  Visit our About Page to email us directly.
